4. Help! Somebody Designed Our Site Then Left Town!

or, How to Maintain a Web Site

  1. Stay calm.
  2. Copy the web site to your computer (File – Save As HTML only and Complete)
  3. To view the page in your browser, go to Start - Documents/My Recent Documents.
  4. To view the source code, choose View- Source in your browser.
  5. Start with the English – ignore the codes and tags at first.
  6. Fly by instruments through the fog: Search for the word you want to change.
  7. Make one change at a time - you get one free "undo" - or make a backup copy.
  8. Here's the routine:
    1. Make a change.
    2. Ctrl-S to save.
    3. Alt-Tab to move from Notepad to your browser window.
    4. Ctrl-R to refresh your browser, to see how the page looks now.
    5. Repeat.
  9. Copy the files from your computer back to the web site using an FTP program.
